Wareatea – Sunday 24th September 2023

Divers: Ben, Youri, Ian & Mark

Oily flat seas, 30m viz & diving a great wreck – no not Vanuatu, it’s Bass Straight! This has been one of the best graveyard dives we have done for a long time. The Wareatea, originally owned by the Union Steamship & later sold to Holyman & Sons, she was on the King Island – Launceston – Melbourne run for over 40 years.
Now past her useful life, she was towed out to the Ships Graveyard & scuttled. Although quite a bit smaller than the Coogee, she has a lot more to offer the wreck diver. The bow is now mainly buried in the sand, although the anchor is still discernible, the stern is amazing. The steam engine & boilers are in good shape, the rudder & prop make for some great photography, overall just a great wreck.
