Longshot Drift – Sunday 10th July 2022

Divers: Seb & Calvin
Surface support: Mark

It was obvious on Friday that the swell outside would not drop enough to allow us to do an outside dive this weekend. We had a few loose ends to tidy up in the bay & with the conditions this good inside, we decided to do a ‘Longshot’ dive & then get a much done as possible before running out of time. Although the wind was slightly stronger than predicted, it was still very manageable & by the time we finish the drift dive, the wind drops, there is not a cloud in the sky & the sun is shinning – what a perfect day to be on the water. We needed to make some minor adjustments to our transducer bracket, so we head over closer to shore, we are just up from Quarantine Bay. Whilst adjusting the bracket a couple of Southern Right Whales (?) meander straight past us, almost hitting our (stationery) boat. So we then motor along the shore line making sure we are at least 200m from the wales at all times, every couple of minutes they would surface, it was amazing that the whales were in only about 6 metres of water – they have the whole bay to swim in & these guys are only 30-40 metres from shore!
